Hey Horror Fans, I know last week did not go the way many of us wanted it or frankly thought it would go. I had this film queued up to talk about last Tuesday and then time just got away from me and it was pushed to this week. However, I have found that a lot of the horror media I consume has a scary way of showing up in my life when I need it most. For those of you who have not seen Even Lambs Have Teeth, I hope you feel that way if you decide to give it a watch.
This film focuses on two young women who have signed up to work on an organic farm for a few months during the summer. They will have room and board and we find out that this job is specifically for them to make money so they can go on a trip to New York.
The film starts with our two main characters Katie and Solan getting ready for their trip. They are going to spend a night with Katie's uncle and he has agreed to drive them to the bus stop the next day. Katie's uncle is an FBI agent who talks with the girls about safety and makes Katie promise to check in with him every day. Once the girls are dropped off they run into two cute boys who offer to drive them to the farm instead of them taking the bus. Sadly Solan convinces Katie it won't be a big deal and the girls get into the truck, This one decision propels these girls into a terrible secret world that most of the town is aware of and participates in.
Katie and Solan are kept in the woods in large shipping containers and men in the town pay for ‘time’ with each of the girls.
I will say the film does a great job in not showing anything too far like some other horror films that have similar themes. As the days go on Katie's uncle starts looking for the girl when Katie's messages stop coming through. We see him trying to put the pieces together and going to the police in this small town. Unfortunately, the police chief is a main player in this operation and orders the girls to be ‘disposed of’ since the uncle is getting too close. Katie and Solan overhear this and know they have to act. This setup kicks off a third-act revenge bloodbath. Katie and Solan are able to escape and steal a car. Instead of leaving this small town, they hit the hardware store and stock up on supplies before hunting down each person who was involved in this operation and issuing out some well-earned revenge.
Overall this was a solid revenge film and I appreciated that the graphic scenes were the revenge sequences and not seeing what Solan and Katie had to go through in the time they were held captive. Additionally, I enjoyed that Katie and Solan's relationship never wavered. In some of these pieces of media, the friends can argue and place blame about how they ended up in the situation. While valid, it's yet another tactic used in dividing women. In today's time when female body autonomy is still something that is discussed, I think films like this can get a bit exhausting for women or female-presenting persons to view. It can sometimes serve as another reminder that we are seen as lesser, as objects, as bodies that only have value based on what men can get out of them.
If you are looking for a wonderful female revenge film, check out Even Lambs Have Teeth. And if you are not in the mood for that right now, that's okay too. That's the wonderful thing about this community and horror media, there is something for everyone and most of the people here are fighting the good fight. Take care of yourselves and your communities and let's keep supporting indie horror.
