Throwback Thursday: Split (2016)

Writer's picture: BeckyBecky

This week back in 2016, M.Night Shyamalan bought us another wonderful movie, Split. Split is part of a film trilogy that follows Unbreakable from 2000, and precedes Glass in 2019, which brings characters from both films, together. The great thing is that it can easily also be watched and enjoyed as a standalone film too, so you don't necessarily need to have seen the others.

Split stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, and a brief cameo/appearance from Bruce Willis. A young Anya gives a great performance as one of the teenagers in peril, but the standout star here is James McAvoy. He plays Kevin who suffers with dissociative personalities, meaning he actually plays 24 different characters! He gives a great performance whichever character he is taking on, but there is a scene toward the end where he switches between each, one after another, and it's honestly blows me away! He is such a fantastic actor.

I'd say this film has elements of horror, thriller and mystery, with twists and turns throughout. There's plenty of action to keep you entertained and even if you don't think it's your kind of film, I would highly recommend watching it just for McAvoy's performance alone!
