This week back in 2003, we were bought an adaptation of a Stephen King book, Dreamcatcher.
This one has been on my watchlist since a friend recommended it, so I'm so glad I had this excuse to watch it. I went in blind. All I knew about was the cast, and WOW what a cast it was! Morgan Freeman, Thomas Jane, Damien Lewis, Jason Lee, Timothy Olyphant, Tom Sizemore, and Donnie Wahlberg being the most recognisable. This meant that the acting was on point (and so were Morgan Freeman's bushy eyebrows!) Damien Lewis was brilliant having to play two different parts, and it was nice seeing Tom Sizemore as a good guy.
I don't want to say too much as I don't want to give anything away for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I was not expecting that storyline at all! I loved the start where we are introduced to our main characters and are shown their abilities. The performances were great, and their friendship was so believable, to the point where I had tears in my eyes during a couple of moments throughout the film.
This film hooked me in almost right away, and just when I thought it was going one way, it took it in a completely different direction.
I love that part of this also took place in the town of Derry, and I'm sure the girl who went missing as was found down the sewer must be a nod toward IT?! Thomas Jane must be a fan of King, as he has also starred in other book adaptations such as 1922 and The Mist.
This was really good, I enjoyed it so much, and possibly even more because I knew nothing about it and it was unexpected. However, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it quite as much upon further watches once that surprise element was gone. I'd still certainly recommend it.
The only thing I would question is, is this horror? There's definitely horror elements, especially towards the start, but it seemed to turn into more of a Sci-fi action film.
