When I tell you this book hit me harder than anything I've read in quite a while, I mean that I spent forty minutes on the elliptical because I was so engrossed in the ending, and almost cried right there in the middle of the gym. While it's absolutely a heartwarming story with tremendous sci-fi elements, the horror is all too real.
Aliens finally make themselves known to Earth's inhabitants, and a whoooole lot of humans reacted exactly how we'd expect them to. However, these aliens mean no harm - quite the opposite in fact. Humans are offered a choice: fly away with these strange, bunny aliens and live a life elsewhere, or stay on Earth and help repair the damage that has been unleashed upon it by humanity. Dr. Dan Smith and his daughter Ellie stay, while his ex-wife and teenage son leave. As the ships fly away, they leave a parting gift for the remaining humans. They drop a virus that causes human DNA to mutate, and gradually, humans begin acquiring traits of various animals. Sometimes, this results in a gender change.
As the humans who are evolving adapt to their new bodies and senses, they find themselves battling the stigma thrust upon them by the humans (who have named themselves "Purebloods"), who haven't yet changed. Despite it being common knowledge that the changes are caused by a virus that attacks DNA, people are still being shunned for things beyond their control. Sound familiar? Groups of people who are different from what's considered "acceptable" by society, being attacked physically and psychology because their identity doesn't fit into a neat little cookie cutter?
These characters are all so loveable! You can't help but cheer them on, celebrate their victories, feel their terror, and mourn their losses as they try to protect their growing family and live their new lives. Definitely don't let all the cheering and celebrating fool you though - there is plenty of fear and mourning to balance it out.
This book is currently available through good ole Amazon!
