ash and her impressively shitty boyfriend are on the road headed to a music festival when construction forces them to take a detour into (but not through!) a small town that just so happens to be hosting a massive festival in honor of a cult classic found footage horror movie that was filmed there 20 years ago; ash, attempting to take advantage of their situation while simultaneously avoiding her boyfriend, takes a pleasant stroll into the woods, only to be confronted with the impossible, and ... shit disintegrates from there.
this was a super quick read, i found the whole premise totally bonkers and unique, and i love a good The Whole Damn Town Is Fucked Up story. (i also love cicadas.) (i can literally hear them hollering outside as i am typing this.) i couldn't get all that invested in any of the characters and i personally didn't really vibe with some of the "ugh, MEN, amirite?" of it all. overall, this was fun! (i can't imagine there are going to be any installments in this series that aren't fun. fun is, like, kinda the whole point.)
i recommend this if you've enjoyed any of the previous killer vhs titles or if you're into ridiculous little romps - 🦷🦷🦷
