Who else is back on a Bill Skarsgård kick after seeing Nosferatu? I hope I’m not alone! This week, I’m recommending Villains, a darkly comedic thriller starring Bill Skarsgård (Mickey) and Maika Monroe (Jules) as amateur criminals.

This film opens with them pulling off a poorly planned robbery. Their goal is to rob and steal their way to Florida and start a new life. However, the couple soon run out of gas and need to think on their feet to avoid getting caught. This leads our amateur criminals to a seemingly normal house in the middle of the woods. Always a great location in a horror movie right?

But what begins as simple breaking-and-entering spirals into something far more sinister when they discover a child chained up in the basement of the house they’ve targeted. They attempt to find keys and plan to bring the young girl with them but the homeowners arrive home and this is when things go from bad to worse.

While the homeowners seem old-fashioned and docile we soon find out they have a few skeletons in their closets. The homeowners George and Gloria (played by Jeffery Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick) end up keeping both Mickey and Jules as captives and the two must try and outwit the experienced villains.

This film has a lot of dark humor and some great turns along the way. Bill and Maika have a wonderfully funny rapport and the energy of their characters makes it very easy to root for them. However, seeing how experienced and in sync the married couple of George and Gloria are I felt myself wanting to know if they could pull this off. Overall this was a very enjoyable watch and I wished I had pushed myself to watch it sooner.
