Happy Halloween Week, Horror Fans! This week, I want to share a hidden gem on Tubi. The Hands of Orlac was released in 1924 and is an Austrian silent film. The premise follows a talented pianist named Orlac who needs a hand transplant after a terrible accident. As Orlac heals from the surgery, he experiences dark and destructive thoughts and feelings. Sadly our dear Orlac has received the hands of a notorious serial killer.
If you haven't seen a silent film yet, this one would be a great starter. The acting is enjoyable and over the top, as is normal for the silent film genre. The score, however, works great in driving the story and providing extra feeling during transition scenes.
I will say that watching Alexandra Sorina as Orlac's wife Yvonne was absolutely wonderful. Between her expressions, costume, and makeup I loved seeing how much emotion she put into each scene she was in. Watching Orlac become more and more unraveled as the film goes on keeps the audience guessing on if he will have the willpower to fight the instincts of his new hands. As a new murder happens, Orlac is put to the test of how well he can keep his sanity and willpower in check.
The Hands of Orlac is the perfect Halloween night film. So pop some popcorn and turn off the lights, this is one silent film that will have you spooked, laughing, and engaged to know if Orlac will crumble to the power of his new hands.
